About your AI game master

Honest answers to fair questions.

What the AI does. Narrates scenes, voices characters, remembers your choices, and adapts the adventure to what you do. Storytelling is its craft. And one thing to remember: your game master is not a person, and nothing it says is advice for the real world. It is a storyteller, not an oracle.

What the AI never does. Decide whether you succeed. Outcomes, dice, damage, and difficulty belong to a rules engine, not the narrator. The AI narrates. The engine adjudicates. When narration and mechanics could disagree, the mechanics win. That is the design, not an accident.

“Why did my game master forget something?”

Your game master keeps notes the way a human GM does, not a word-for-word transcript. The big things stick: who you are, what you have done, what you carry. Small details can occasionally blur. Corrections in plain language (“Actually, the door was locked behind us”) put the record straight.

“The narration said something odd.”

It happens. AI narration is imperfect, and we say so up front rather than let you discover it mid-dungeon. The important part: an odd sentence cannot change your hit points, your gold, or your fate. The rules engine does not read like a poem. It has no moods, no favorites, and no flair for drama. Your hit points, your gold, and your fate change only when the rules say so.

“Is the game master going easy on me?”

No. Difficulty comes from the rules, not the AI’s mood. It cannot fudge a roll in either direction; see Dice & rules.

“Can I say anything?”

Play in good faith and the table plays along. Grim, violent, and morally gray are all part of the genre. But Sagecraft has hard lines: no sexual content involving minors, no impersonation of real people, no instructions for weapons capable of mass harm, and no guidance for harming yourself or others. Your game master will decline those directions and offer the story a different road. If something crosses a line for you, tell us in the Discord feedback channel and a human will review it. We log gameplay so we can investigate reports and improve the game.

A note from the smiths

Sagecraft is in beta. The mechanics are held to the harder standard: when one misses, that is a bug, and we fix it for everyone. Tell us. The prose sometimes needs another pass. The Discord feedback channel reaches us directly.
